Sekonic Zoom Meter L-228 with neck strap and original Sekonic case!
The Sekonic Zoom Meter L-228 is a vintage, handheld, reflected-light meter that uses a zoom finder for variable-angle metering. It was designed for both spot and average metering and is suitable for outdoor use. As a legacy model, it is no longer sold new and must be purchased pre-owned.
Specifications:
- Metering system: Reflected light with a zoom viewfinder.
- Metering modes: Provides both average and spot metering, with the acceptance angle adjustable via a zoom control.
- Variable acceptance angle: The meter's angle of view is variable from 8.2° to 28°, which corresponds to the angle of view of 300mm to 85mm lenses on a 35mm camera.
- Exposure calculation: Features an analog calculator dial, similar to older Weston meters, for determining correct exposure. The dial includes f/stops marked in half-stops and shutter speeds in third-stop increments.
- CdS cell: The meter uses a Cadmium Sulfide (CdS) photo cell for light measurement.
- Battery: The L-228 was originally designed to use mercury batteries, which are no longer available. Modern workarounds, such as using zinc-air hearing aid batteries with compensation or a voltage-correcting diode, are required.
- Zone System scale: Vinyl, waterproof scale stickers were available from third-party sellers to make using the meter for the Zone System easier.
