Argus C3 with original case and neck strap!
The Argus C3, affectionately known as "The Brick" for its robust, boxy design, is an iconic American 35mm film rangefinder camera that was mass-produced from 1939 to 1966. It is famous for its rugged durability, simple mechanics, and role in popularising 35mm photography in the US.
Specifications:
- Film Type: Uses standard 135 (35mm) film.
- Lens: Equipped with an interchangeable Argus Coated Cintar 50mm f/3.5 triplet lens (post-1945 models had coated lenses). Other, slower lenses (35mm, 100mm, 135mm) were also available.
- Focusing: Features a coupled rangefinder with a separate eyepiece for focusing (split image) and another for framing the shot. The rangefinder is coupled to the lens via external gears.
- Shutter: A simple leaf shutter built into the camera body, offering shutter speeds from 1/10 to 1/300 second plus a Bulb (B) mode.
- Exposure: Fully manual exposure control with an aperture range of f/3.5 to f/16. It does not have a built-in light meter (except for some later variants like the Matchmatic, which had an external selenium meter attachment).
- Flash: Early models had two sockets on the side for a proprietary flashgun attachment, with flash synchronisation available at all speeds. Later models added a cold shoe.
- Construction: The body is primarily made of Bakelite with metal castings for the front and back, contributing to its substantial weight and durability.
- Weight: Approximately 760g (26.8 oz).
