The Leica M6 (1984–1998) is a legendary 35mm rangefinder combining the mechanical reliability of the M4-P with an internal light meter. Featuring a compact zinc alloy top plate, it uses 2x LR44 batteries for its 2-LED metering system but works entirely without them. It is renowned for its bright 0.72x viewfinder and quiet, cloth shutter.
The Leica M6 "Panda" is a nickname for a specific variation of the silver chrome Leica M6 Classic (produced roughly 1988–1994) that features black top-plate fittings—such as the winding lever, rewind crank, and shutter speed dial—creating a high-contrast, black-and-white panda look
Key Characteristics
- Dimensions: It is 2-3 mm shorter than the later M6 TTL, offering a more compact feel.
- Shutter Speed Dial: Smaller, traditionally designed, and rotates in the same direction as M4/M2 models, though it is slightly harder to turn with the eye to the viewfinder compared to the TTL.
- Light Meter: Uses two red arrow LEDs in the viewfinder that indicate which way to turn the aperture/shutter dial for correct exposure.
- Construction: Uses a magnesium alloy top/bottom plate (lighter), though some early models/specials used brass.
